What Does Drupal “End of Life” (EOL) Even Mean?

In the Drupal world, when a version reaches EOL status, the community comes to a consensus to not issue new free updates or offer free support for that version. The intention is to allow community resources to get focused on new versions. This means new features aren't added, modern standards don't get implemented, and bugs don't get fixed for the older versions. Drupal 6 is currently in this EOL status. Thousands of these D6 sites require Long Term Support from a vendor like myDropWizard or extreme vigilance by their owners.

When do Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 Reach End of Life?

  • Drupal 7 EOL is November of 2022. There are hundreds of thousands of these sites and upgrading them to Drupal 8+ is expensive and difficult. Typically some sort of rewrite is required.
  • Drupal 8 EOL is November 2021. Yes, Drupal 7 is going to be supported longer than Drupal 8. There are many reasons for this but notably, the upgrade from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9 should be much easier than from Drupal 7 to either Drupal 8 or Drupal 9. The Drupal 8 EOL date is dictated by the Symfony library software upon which it is built. That software has its own EOL which is forcing Drupal 8 to move on as well!

Long Term Support Options From myDropWizard for Drupal 7 and 8

The relative ease of update from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9 should not require the same "Long Term Support" options as existed for Drupal 6 and in the future with Drupal 7. So, myDropWizard will be working with our remaining Drupal 8 clients to get them updated to Drupal 9 solutions before the Drupal 8 EOL date. We will not be supporting Drupal 8 sites after Drupal 8 enters EOL status.

We are still formulating our official "Extended Support" plans for Drupal 7. We'll have an announcement soon. We will be supporting Drupal 7 for years to come with our D7ES offering!
